DNER investigates possible reduction in bioluminescence in Vieques bay

The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) has initiated a technical assessment regarding a possible reduction in bioluminescence levels at Puerto Mosquito Bay in Vieques, agency secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez announced on Monday.
“This is a matter of great importance to the agency, and we will address it with the necessary urgency,” Quiles stated in a written release.
The assessment is being carried out by personnel from the DNER’s Auxiliary Secretariat for Conservation and Research, who are examining bioluminescence measurements within this ecosystem.
Puerto Mosquito is internationally renowned for the intensity of its bioluminescence and has been listed by Guinness World Records as one of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world.
“This is one of the most beautiful bays in the entire world -- a treasure of Puerto Rico -- and its ecological diversity is essential; that is why this assessment has been commissioned,” the secretary said.
