Ferries transport a record 558,000 passengers during summer season

The Integrated Transportation Authority (ATI by its initials in Spanish), in conjunction with Puerto Rico Ferry, on Thursday announced record growth in the number of passengers who used the maritime transportation system from June to August of this year.
During the three-month period, more than 558,000 passengers used the service, representing an increase of more than 13% compared to the same period of the previous year.
On the route to the offshore island municipalities of Vieques and Culebra, passenger numbers increased by about 13% between June and August, reaching roughly 440,000 passengers during the summer months. So far this year, the route has already carried more than 1.07 million passengers.
Similarly, the Metro route between San Juan and Cataño saw a growth of around 16% during the three-month period, transporting more than 121,000 passengers. So far this year, the Metro route has maintained a record growth rate of 14%.
The latest results continue the growth trend seen since the beginning of the year in Puerto Rico Ferry services. Overall, the system has safely and reliably transported some 1.43 million passengers between January and August, representing an 11% increase compared to the same period in 2025.
The system’s performance also includes the successful completion of nearly 16,000 trips across all its routes, with a combined on-time performance rate of 96%. Those figures reflect the reliability of the maritime transport system for the residents, businesses and visitors who depend on this service daily.
The growth recorded this year continues the historic results achieved in 2025, when more than 1.8 million passengers used Puerto Rico Ferry services.
“The numbers we are seeing reflect the importance of maritime transportation within our mobility system and, above all, the continued trust that passengers place in the service,” ATI Executive Director Josué Menéndez Agosto said.
