Five people were arrested early Tuesday in connection with the killing of a tourist from Florida, San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo announced.
The arrests came after Municipal Police officers responded immediately while conducting preventive patrols under the city’s new security plan.
“This case shows that an active police presence and a well-structured security plan deliver results,” Romero Lugo said. “Our officers acted swiftly, preventing the suspects from escaping and securing key evidence. Our priority is to protect lives and keep San Juan safe for residents and visitors.”
The incident occurred around 12:41 a.m. at the Monostereo bar on San Sebastián Street in Old San Juan. A fight broke out inside the bar and spilled onto the street, where one individual allegedly fired a gun, killing the tourist.
Municipal officers in the area intervened immediately, arresting five suspects as they tried to flee. Police seized evidence, including a mask and a vehicle believed to contain the firearm used in the shooting.
Municipal Police Commissioner Juan Jackson Rodríguez credited the rapid response to the new security plan.
“Strategic patrols allowed us to act immediately, control the situation, and make arrests at the scene,” he said. “This plan anticipates, responds, and protects -- and today we saw it work.”
The case has been referred to the Puerto Rico Police Bureau’s Criminal Investigations Corps, which is working with Municipal Police.
Romero Lugo pledged to strengthen the security plan with more patrols, interagency coordination and decisive action.
“There is no room for violence in the capital city,” he said.
