The U.S. Army headquarters in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean will conduct a drill today for responding to a terrorist attack.
The exercise will assess the installation’s readiness to handle an attack while ensuring that emergency and security personnel remain prepared.
During the drill, residents on or near Fort Buchanan in Guaynabo may hear announcements over the PA system, sirens, and see emergency response vehicles and personnel. Additionally, drivers entering or leaving the base may experience delays at the entrances. People are encouraged to arrive early for appointments and to call ahead to verify whether the exercise will impact their appointments and services.
“It is very important for Fort Buchanan and the island’s military community to engage in these drills to ensure we are ready for any scenario,” said Col. John D. Samples, commander of Fort Buchanan. “Of course, we hope an attack never occurs, but if it does, it is our responsibility to be prepared to respond promptly.”
According to the Army’s counterterrorism program, terrorism is a persistent and global threat to the nation and its military forces. Army personnel, in collaboration with other agencies, must be able to deter, prevent and defend against various terrorist tactics.
With an annual economic contribution exceeding $500 million, Fort Buchanan supports a military community of some 15,000 active-duty personnel, including members from the Reserve, National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve and Navy Reserve. Fort Buchanan’s mission is to enhance readiness and facilitate the deployment of military personnel anywhere, at any time.
