The spokesperson for the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) in the House of Representatives, Héctor Ferrer Santiago, called the Secretary of Public Security, Arturo Garffer, and Governor Jenniffer González insensitive after their decision to withdraw federal funds from the municipality of Aguadilla, after Mayor Julio Roldán adopted a public policy of non-collaboration with federal immigration agencies. This was achieved through the approval of Municipal Ordinance 82, which declares the municipality a sanctuary city.
“It is an act of insensitivity, vindictiveness, and a lack of empathy toward vulnerable communities seeking protection and dignity. The administration of Jenniffer González has taken the coldest and most punitive route: depriving funds of a city that, with courage and humanity, has chosen to protect the most vulnerable instead of persecuting them,” Ferrer said.
Ferrer criticized the administration of Jenniffer González for using public funds as a tool to impose its ideological vision, even if it means putting the safety of entire communities at risk.
“You cannot govern through threats or punishment. Public policies must respond to the well-being of the people, not to political revenge or ideological pressures,” Ferrer stated.
According to reports, the Secretary of Public Security, Arturo Garffer, ordered the cancellation of federal funds allocated to the Aguadilla municipal police, citing a “failure to comply with the principles of interagency cooperation that are fundamental to the implementation and effectiveness of the OPSG program.”
“They talk about municipal autonomy, but when a mayor makes responsible and fair decisions, they punish him. They talk about security, but they cut resources for those who are doing their jobs with dignity and respect for human rights,” the House spokesperson added.
The Popular Party legislator reiterated his support for the municipality of Aguadilla and all efforts based on the defense of human dignity.
“Protecting civil rights and the security of our communities is not an ideological position; it is a moral obligation. And it is clear that the Governor has not understood this,” Ferrer Santiago stated.
