Gov. Jenniffer González Colón signed Joint Resolution 8 on Wednesday to name State Highway PR-36 in San Juan after Ramón Luis “Daddy Yankee” Ayala Rodríguez.

“Daddy Yankee is one of the most internationally influential Puerto Rican artists. The Big Boss has been a pioneer who has taken Puerto Rico’s name to stages around the world and opened doors for numerous reggaetón artists, as well as other Puerto Rican and Latino artists,” the governor said in a written statement. “With over 30 years in the business, he continues to impact generations, which is why, along with Olga Tañón, he will be our spokesperson for the ‘Yo Te Quiero Puerto Rico’ tourism campaign in 2026.

“By naming this state highway after him, located near where he grew up in Villa Kennedy, we want to highlight how one of our own has become a musical icon who has filled us with pride and gotten everyone dancing.”

The legislation highlights that the urban music pioneer’s “life has been marked by a profound spiritual transformation, the fruit of his encounter and relationship with God, which has significantly influenced his character, personal decisions, and outlook on life.”

“His faith and love for God have strengthened his sense of purpose, social responsibility, and service, reflected in conduct guided by ethical values and moral principles,” the document reads. “His personal story, marked by overcoming adversity, perseverance, and spiritual renewal, serves as an inspiring example for Puerto Rican youth and reinforces values of discipline, effort, humility, and national pride.”

The renaming of highway PR-36 in Santurce in the Municipality of San Juan must be completed within 30 days of the measure being signed. The date of the official naming ceremony is yet to be announced.
