Guayama secures first women’s baseball postseason berth

The Estrellas del Guamaní of Guayama (7-1) has become the first team to qualify for the Women’s Baseball League 2026 postseason.

The Estrellas del Guamaní of Guayama became the first team to qualify for the Women’s Baseball League 2026 postseason by sweeping the Ponys of Santa Isabel in a South section doubleheader earlier this week and improving their record to a league-best 7-1.

Guayama won Monday’s first game 3-2 with a walk-off victory in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Valeria Rosado drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the winning run.

Valeria Negrón earned the win in relief, pitching four scoreless innings and striking out five batters.

In the second game, the Estrellas completed the sweep with an 11-1 victory. Brichnelix Centeno drove in three runs and Anishka Aponte scored three times, while Yailyn Lebrón earned the victory, allowing one run over 3.1 innings.

Also in the South section, the Poetas of Juana Díaz moved closer to qualifying by defeating the Piratas of Cabo Rojo 15-0 and 22-9.

Danna González won the first game with five strikeouts over four innings, and Milyanis Cruz drove in four runs. In the second game, Alondra Aguayo drove in four runs and Kiara Irizarry scored four times.

Meanwhile, the defending champion Montañesas of Utuado split their doubleheader with the Artesanas of Las Piedras, retaining first place in the North section with a 6-2 record.

Utuado prevailed 7-5 in the first game, with Noelia de Jesús pitching 5.1 innings and Janiliz Rivera driving in three runs. Las Piedras responded with a 6-3 win in the second game, backed by five innings of mound work from Jazmine Rivera.

The doubleheader between the Cocoteras of Loíza and the Maceteras of Vega Alta was suspended due to rain.

The season will resume this Saturday starting at 6 p.m., with Cabo Rojo at Guayama, Juana Díaz at Santa Isabel, Las Piedras at Loíza and Vega Alta at Utuado.
