As of Sunday, the San Juan Area weather station had recorded a total of 49 consecutive days with maximum temperatures of 90°F or higher, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The streak of extreme heat continued to set a new record in the region by far surpassing the previous record of 36 consecutive days set in 2012.
The high temperatures that have been holding in San Juan and its surroundings have been a cause for concern among experts and residents, who have felt the effects of this unusual heat. According to the NWS, the persistence of high temperatures is unusual for this time of year and could be an indicator of broader changes in the region’s weather patterns.
The forecast indicates that maximum temperatures could continue at or above 90°F in the coming days, which would further increase the duration of the record heat wave. If conditions continue, the streak is expected to continue for a total of 50 days or more, an unprecedented milestone in Puerto Rico’s climate history.
Authorities recommend that the population take precautions against intense heat, such as staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and seeking cool or air-conditioned places, especially during the hottest hours.
