Secretary of State Rosachely Rivera Santana recently inaugurated the first of several reconstruction projects managed by Colegio San Antonio Abad in Humacao, in collaboration with the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resilience (COR3) with a total allocation of $10.5 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
As part of the efforts, the institution completed the total reconstruction of the chemistry classroom and lab, as well as other areas, with an investment of $2.7 million from the funds. The project will directly benefit the entire school community.
Rivera Santana stressed that not only was a new facility built, but an essential space was constructed to provide better education.
“This achievement also demonstrates that reconstruction in Puerto Rico is indeed possible when there is planning, coordination, and political will,” the secretary of state said. “Under the Working Capital Advance program, COR3 has already authorized an additional disbursement of $2.6 million for the institution to continue working on its upcoming projects. This means that this effort does not end today; on the contrary, today we see the visible beginning of a broader transformation.”
The project included the demolition of the previous structure and the construction of a new one-level building, made of reinforced concrete, with an approximate area of 3,500 square feet.
COR3 Executive Director Eduardo Soria Rivera emphasized the importance of the educational impact of the initiatives.
“Each completed project represents an additional step in the reconstruction process,” he said. “This investment strengthens the educational environment and guarantees modern and safe facilities for the academic development of students.”
The new building features a classroom for teaching chemistry, a storage area, renovated furniture, and updated laboratory equipment.
