Kenyan Peter Njeru successfully defended his title at the 64th San Blas Half Marathon in Coamo on Sunday with a time of one hour, 3 minutes and 13 seconds (1:03:13), crossing the finish line over half a minute ahead of his closest challenger. In the women’s race, Werkuha Getachew of Ethiopia was the winner by a similar margin, with a time of 1:12:23.
Luis Miguel Masabanda Ojeda of Ecuador placed second in the men’s race with a time of 1:03:45. Reuben Keiro of Kenya was third in 1:04:17.
Everlyn Kemboi of the United States was the women’s runner-up, finishing in 1:12:56. Joyline Chemutai of Kenya placed third, in 1:15:14.
The top local finisher in the men’s division was David Ortiz Rodríguez of Coamo, who completed the 13.05-mile (21-kilometer) course in 1:18:36. On the women’s side, the top local finisher was Lizmarie Sánchez Centeno of Coamo with a time of 1:31:29.
A total of 4,251 runners finished the race.
In the wheelchair race, Bernardino Ruiz Dávila of Salinas was the overall winner with a time of 1:32:10, while Alba Rivera de Jesús of Bayamón was the top female finisher, in 2:33:45.
