Manatí pulls away late to beat Mayagüez

Brandon Knight had 32 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Mets of Guaynabo over the Santeros of Aguada, 98-86, on Tuesday night at Fernando “Rube” Hernández Coliseum in Gurabo.


In the evening’s other Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) league game, the Osos of Manatí beat the Indios of Mayagüez on the road, 106-92.


In Gurabo, the Mets led at halftime, 43-29, then held off the Santeros in the second half en route to the win.


In support of Knight, Jaysean Paige scored 22 points, while Torrey Craig contributed 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Guaynabo (10-9).


Rigoberto Mendoza finished with 21 points and nine assists for Aguada (10-9), while Manny Camper and Jacob Wiley added 16 points each.


At the Palacio de Recreación y Deportes in Mayagüez, the contest was tight for much of the first half, with Manatí taking an early lead that shrank to a point at the break, 52-51.


The score was tied at 66 halfway through the third quarter, but the Osos led 81-76 at the end of the period, then opened the fourth with a 5-0 run to pull away for the double-digit win.


Kristian Doolittle and Tyquan Rolón led Manatí (8-12) with 26 points apiece, with Doolittle grabbing 11 rebounds. Jameer Nelson Jr. made his debut with 20 points and six assists.


For the Indios (8-12), Thomas Robinson finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Nathan Sobey had 17 points and six assists.
