Lawmaker slams independence alliance security platform

By The Star Staff

Popular Democratic Party Rep. Ramón Luis Cruz Burgos questioned the security proposal presented Tuesday by Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) gubernatorial candidate Juan Dalmau Ramírez and backed by the PIP-Citizen Victory Movement independence alliance, since in his opinion “it is nothing more than a rehash of the ideas already raised by Jesús Manuel Ortiz,” the PDP candidate for governor.

“In April of this year, approximately, Jesús Manuel Ortiz presented his security proposal in which he establishes the elimination of the Department of Public Safety [DSP by its initials in Spanish] for being a bureaucratic apparatus invented by the NPP [New Progressive Party] that has not resulted in any benefit for the war against drugs or for citizens to feel safer,” Cruz Burgos said.

The PDP legislator went on to say that “Jesús Manuel’s record on this issue is clear; as a legislator he was co-author with me of [House Bill] 295, which seeks the elimination of the DSP.”

“He does not speak with hypothetical solutions on this issue, but rather he has worked himself as a legislator seeking exactly that end,” Cruz Burgos said. “This was made clear in the public hearings presided over by me, where members of all the bureaus testified in favor of its elimination. While the Alliance is dedicated to presenting recycled ideas, Jesús Manuel Ortiz has demonstrated leadership and concrete action on this issue.”

The District 3 lawmaker stressed that, regarding the Alliance’s proposals on the legalization of substances, the solution is not the decriminalization of all substances, but rather to emphasize and prioritize the public health approach to treating addiction.

“The solution is not in indiscriminate legalization, but rather to address the problem from a public health perspective” Cruz Burgos said.
