On Saturday, the Leones of Ponce defeated the Indios of Mayagüez 89-85 in the opening game of the 2026 National Superior Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) season at the Palacio de Recreación y Deportes in Mayagüez.
The Leones dominated the first half, leading 49-39. Although the Indios attempted to make adjustments in the second half, Ponce managed the game effectively during key moments. Ponce’s Christian Negrón was the game’s standout player, finishing with 21 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 blocks, followed by point guard Johned Walker, who contributed 19 points. Avry Holmes added 13 points in his debut for the Leones.
Olumiye Oni led the Indios with 29 points, while Benito Santiago added 17 points.
Ponce will host their home opener this Thursday at Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium, where they will tip off against the Atléticos of San Germán at 8 p.m.

Did you catch the recap of Leones opening the BSN season with a big win yet? I’m curious — for a bit more context on the leadership and strategy behind successful teams and organizations (even off the court), does anyone know where I could read up on the story of a company that grew from a startup into a global player in its industry?
