The owner of Monostereo cocktail bar, Gabriel Álvarez, alleged earlier this week that the incident that culminated in the death of a tourist in Old San Juan did not occur at his establishment, contrary to the information initially disseminated by the San Juan Municipal Police.

“The information widely disseminated by the authorities, which stated that the incident that culminated in the death of a tourist in Old San Juan began with a fight at the Monostereo business, is incorrect,” Álvarez said in a written statement issued Wednesday.

“We do not know where this information came from, but on the night of the incident, no fight was reported at our establishment,” he added.

The bar owner said he has already made himself available to the authorities, as part of the community of San Sebastián Street in Old San Juan, to clarify any doubts related to the investigation and to collaborate in clarifying what took place during the incident.

Álvarez’s reaction came after the San Juan Municipal Police reported that the killing, which occurred at 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday, began with a fight at Monostereo, which is located on San Sebastián Street, according to the preliminary report released by the agency.

According to the Municipal Police, the altercation spilled into the street, where one of those involved shot and killed 40-year-old Nathan Joel Castro, a resident of Florida. Municipal officers arrested five suspects as they attempted to flee the scene.

Álvarez noted that the business’s connection to the case has received widespread local and international media coverage, which has impacted the establishment’s reputation, and reiterated his willingness to cooperate with authorities as the probe continues under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Division.
