New law gives gaming agents police powers

With the implementation of a new law, which expands the powers of gaming agents and equates their powers to those of the police, the Puerto Rico Gaming Commission is strengthening its security division to oversee the gaming industry on the island.
“Adopting this new statute allows us to reinforce the resources assigned to an important and growing economic sector, such as sports betting, casinos, roadside gambling machines, and the horse racing industry, among other components, to make Puerto Rico an ideal place to carry out these activities,” Gaming Commission Executive Director Juan Santaella Marchán said. “The creation by law of a specialized body with law enforcement powers promotes an environment of greater confidence for players, businesses and the industry. At the same time, it promotes fair oversight of legal collection for the benefit of the public budget and the social contributions made by the gaming industry, such as its contribution to the University of Puerto Rico and the Police retirement [system].”
According to the official, the new law amends Articles 1.3 and 2.2 of Law 81-2019, known as the Gaming Commission Law of the Government of Puerto Rico, to redefine “gaming agent” by granting that title new powers, including making arrests and handling situations that were previously only the responsibility of the police. Other legal figures with the same functions are Natural Resources rangers and Treasury inspectors.
Santaella Marchán added that as part of the plan, gaming agents will be trained by the Puerto Rico Police Academy in Gurabo.
