The metropolitan area of San Juan experienced a historic heat record on Wednesday, when the thermometer reached 96°F at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Carolina, which exceeds the previous maximum of 95°F that had been established in 1979.

This new record represents the highest temperature recorded in the metro area over four decades.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said the extreme temperature is due to a combination of factors, including high atmospheric pressure, minimal cloudiness and the influence of the warm winds that have prevailed over the island in recent days. In addition, low humidity has allowed the heat to intensify even more.

The new heat record is part of a trend of high temperatures that has been experienced throughout the region, and it was expected that the next few days will continue with hot conditions, although the possibility of afternoon showers was not ruled out. The NWS reminded citizens of the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during the hottest hours.

The 96°F mark represents a climate milestone for San Juan. Meteorologists said the warm pattern could extend through the weekend.
