San Juan District 4 Rep. Víctor Parés on Monday announced the allocation of $2.09 million for the design and construction of new sidewalks in the Altamesa and Monacillos areas, located on the outskirts of PR-21.

“Last year, we initiated a comprehensive project to renovate the sidewalk network in our Representative District. Sidewalks have become increasingly important due to the demographic changes we are experiencing, particularly with over one million citizens aged 65 and older. Today, I am pleased to announce the allocation of $190,000 for the design and $1.9 million for the construction of a new sidewalk network in the Altamesa and Monacillos areas,” said Parés, who also chairs the House Government Committee.

The legislator expressed gratitude to those who contributed to this effort. “I want to thank Governor Jennifer González for her support of this important project and Mayor Miguel Romero of San Juan for his attentiveness to the initiative. The federal funds, sourced from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), were allocated to the Department of Transportation and Public Works and are now being transferred to the Municipality of San Juan for this project, which will benefit many people,” he added.

The plan includes marking highway crossing zones with reflective paint and installing pedestrian signal systems at high-traffic intersections. These systems will clearly indicate when it is safe to cross, thereby enhancing pedestrian safety.
