Ponce earns first victory in LVSF with 4-set win over Juncos

The Leonas of Ponce notched their first victory of the season in the Women’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSF by its initials in Spanish) by defeating the Valencianas of Juncos in four sets on Sunday night at Rafael G. Amalbert Coliseum in Juncos.


With the win, Ponce earned the three available points and improved its record to 1-3 (3 points). The Valencianas, meanwhile, remain winless and without points after four matches.


The sets ended 25-23, 25-16, 19-25 and 25-21.


Juncos extended the match to the fourth set after a 6-0 run with the score tied at 19. That surge included an attack by Haley Bush from zone four, an error by Jordan Wilson on a cross-court spike, blocks against Andrea Serra and Jenselyn Morales, and a final block against Wilson to seal the set.


In the following set, the Leonas (Lionesses) regained control and pulled away to a 16-10 lead that they never relinquished.


In team statistics, Ponce had the edge in attacks, 46-44, and in aces, 6-5. Juncos was superior in blocks (10-9), digs (59-55), passes (39-27), and assists (11-10).


Ponce’s offense was led by Wilson, who had 23 points (21 attacks, 1 block and 1 ace).


Haley Bush contributed 21 points for Juncos, while Keishlyann Sánchez added 10.


LVSF play continues this Wednesday with two matches:


• Criollas of Caguas vs. Valencianas of Juncos, 8:30 p.m.


• Atenienses of Manatí vs. Leonas of Ponce, 8 p.m.
