Leonas & Criollas in a win-or-go-home duel on Wednesday
By THE STAR STAFF
Semifinal Series B of the Women’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSF by its initials in Spanish) will feature a seventh and decisive match this Wednesday, after the Leonas of Ponce successfully defended their home court -- Juan “Pachín” Vicéns Auditorium -- for the third consecutive time by defeating the Criollas of Caguas in straight sets on Sunday night.
The match was contested with the intensity of a championship final, with all three sets decided in extra points in favor of the Leonas: 26-24, 29-27 and 28-26.
Ponce came from behind in every single set. In the first, Caguas was unable to hold onto leads of 12-5 and later 22-18, despite effective spiking from Alexandra Sczech.
The Leonas responded with a 4-0 run -- fueled by two attacks from Sherridan Atkinson -- to tie the score at 22. After trading points until the score reached 24-24, Ponce closed out the set with another spike from Atkinson and a block by Jenselyn Morales against Caguas’ Genesis Collazo.
In the following two sets, the Criollas once again had victory within their grasp -- holding identical 24-22 leads -- but failed to close them out. The home team capitalized on every opportunity to seal the win in both sets in extra points.
Ponce’s leading scorers were Atkinson, who tallied 24 points, and Claire Chaussee, who contributed 20.
Jenaisya Moore led the scoring for Caguas with 15 points, followed by Temi Thomas-Ailara with 12, while Sczech and Collazo each contributed 11.
In team statistics, Ponce prevailed in attacks (49-48), aces (3-0), digs (90-83), passes (46-35), and assists (20-6). Caguas led in blocks (13–9).
The winner of Wednesday’s match will advance to play the undefeated Cangrejeras of Santurce in the finals.
