The Puerto Rican delegation placed third in the medals count at the ITF Central American and Caribbean Taekwondo Cup, held July 26-27 in Santiago, Dominican Republic, winning a total of 60 medals.

“The athletes demonstrated perseverance, discipline, and great commitment, gained international experience, and honored Puerto Rico,” coach Gabriel Candelaria said in a written statement.

More than 400 athletes from 10 countries participated in the competition. The Puerto Rican team won 22 gold medals, 18 silver medals and 20 bronze medals.

The delegation included athletes from Progressive Learning Institute, Taekwondo Zone, Athletic Taekwondo Center, Centro Integral de Taekwondo, Inspire Taekwondo and Active Taekwondo. Additionally, it had the support of the president of the International Taekwondo Association (ITF), Master Gato Gato, and a technical team composed of John Rodríguez, Christy Flores, Michael Rivera and Luz Mulero.

The delegation’s performance reaffirms the growth of the discipline in Puerto Rico and the commitment of instructors, athletes, and their families to developing leaders with values both inside and outside the competition arena.
