The Puerto Rican women’s softball team will have several opportunities to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, after the World Baseball Softball Confederation approved the qualification system in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee.
The Olympic softball tournament will feature six teams, and the qualification process will be conducted through five international events. Puerto Rico could have its first opportunity this summer when it participates in the preliminary round of the Women’s Softball World Cup in Lima, Peru, July 14-18.
If Puerto Rico finishes among the top two teams, it will advance to the World Cup Final, which will be held this September in Oklahoma. The highest-ranked team in the 2027 World Cup Final will earn a direct berth to the Olympic Games in 2028.
If Puerto Rico fails to qualify through that route, it will have a second chance in the Americas Continental Qualifier, a six-team tournament whose champion will secure its place at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
A third and final option will be the Final Qualifying Event, to be held before April 2028. The teams that finish second and third in the Asia/Oceania, Europe/Africa, and Americas Continental Qualifiers will advance to this tournament, and the winner will earn the final Olympic berth.
“The qualification system approved for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games reflects our commitment to excellence and a high-level global tournament,” said World Baseball Softball Confederation President Riccardo Fraccari.
The United States, as the host country, has already secured a spot in the Olympic women’s softball tournament, which will be played in Oklahoma. Each Olympic team will be composed of 15 athletes, all at least 16 years old in the year of the competition.
