PRASA invests $1.8 million to expedite leak repairs

Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) Executive President Luis R. González Delgado announced an initiative on Thursday involving an investment of $1,825,000 to hire private crews to address, more rapidly, the leaks causing potable water loss before and during the drought emergency.

“At a time when Puerto Rico is facing drought conditions, it is necessary to step up our efforts to reduce potable water losses within the system,” González Delgado said in a written statement. “This initiative expands our capacity to identify and address leaks more quickly. Furthermore, the hotline provides a simple way for the public to alert us and help us intervene more rapidly.” 

As part of the effort, PRASA has set up the number 787-993-2440 exclusively to receive reports of potential leaks. The service will be available from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Starting immediately, anyone who spots a leak can contact the public corporation directly. When calling, the person should specify the road, street, or thoroughfare where the leak is located and provide a reference point to help pinpoint it.

Using the information obtained, PRASA aims to speed up leak identification and direct available resources to areas requiring attention. Private crews will supplement the public corporation’s staff, increasing the capacity to respond to reports and carry out repairs across Puerto Rico.

Given the reduced water supplies, González Delgado also urged the public to use water only for essential needs and to avoid high-consumption activities -- such as washing vehicles, filling swimming pools, hosing down sidewalks, or watering lawns and gardens.

“Every drop we save helps protect our water supplies and ensures that water can reach more families,” he said.
