The island Family Department, through the Families and Children Administration (ADFAN by its acronym in Spanish), on Thursday began the delivery of 300 computers to elderly adults who completed a training program in the management of technology and prevention of fraud and exploitation.

The initiative seeks to close the digital gap in the senior population and offers tools for interacting in a secure manner with the digital environment.

“Technology is not only a tool, it is a bridge of opportunities and protects those who are vulnerable,” Family Secretary Ciení Rodríguez Troche said in a written statement during the first delivery, held at Luis Muñoz Marín Park in San Juan. The totality of the computers will be delivered in a week.

The workshops held in the ADFAN’s Multipurpose Centers for People of Advanced Age (CAMPEA) focused on training the participants to navigate digital platforms in a safe and secure manner and preventing online fraud.

ADFAN Administrator Nicole Báez Ortiz stressed that digital education is key so that older adults can protect themselves from economic exploitation.

In addition, the Family Department has established new cybercafés throughout the island so that all CAMPEA participants have access to technological equipment.

“This project is only the beginning,” Rodríguez Troche said. “We aspire for all older adults in Puerto Rico to have the necessary tools to access the digital world in a safe and confident manner.”
