Rincón Mayor Carlos D. López Bonilla announced a $1.1 million investment this week to upgrade and expand recreational infrastructure along the municipality’s coastline, a project timed with the start of the summer tourism season.
“Rincón is the Surfing Capital of Puerto Rico and the most visited tourist destination in the west, both by Puerto Ricans and tourists from all over the world,” López Bonilla said during the project’s inauguration.
The initiative includes the construction of a new boat ramp and the rehabilitation of the marina area. Improvements feature full asphalt paving of the parking lot, designated spaces for trailers and towed vehicles, and new specialized signage to guide beachgoers. The mayor said the upgrades are designed to enhance visitor experience while strengthening environmental protections.
“This investment contributes to the enjoyment of Rincón residents and visitors, but also to the safety and protection of our natural environment,” he said.
Rincón remains one of Puerto Rico’s most recognized tourism hubs, a distinction reflected in international travel platforms such as TripAdvisor. The town offers a wide range of lodging options -- including Villa Cofresí, Casa Verde, Rincón of the Seas and The Lazy Parrot -- as well as numerous short-term rentals and restaurants.
Among its most iconic attractions is the Punta Higuero Lighthouse, overlooking Domes Beach, a favorite among surfers for its powerful waves. Sandy Beach continues to draw crowds, while Steps Beach is home to the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, known for its parrotfish populations and hawksbill turtles. Farther south, visitors find the calmer Caribbean waters of Playa Córsica, and offshore coral reefs encircle the remote Desecheo Island.
The lighthouse area also serves as a gathering point for local artisans, whose colorful handmade pieces have become part of the town’s cultural identity. Visitors are encouraged to stay through the afternoon to enjoy the West Coast’s signature sunsets.
