Sabana Grande sits alone atop LPSF after doubleheader sweep

Luna Taboas scored a pair of runs in the first game as the Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande swept a doubleheader against the Costaneras of Guánica on Sunday to take sole possession of first place in the Women’s Premier Softball League.

The Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande swept the Costaneras of Guánica in a doubleheader on Sunday, one of seven games on the slate in the Women’s Premier Softball League (LPSF by its initials in Spanish).

Sabana Grande prevailed with scores of 5-3 and 7-1, improving its record to 7-2 and taking sole possession of first place in the LPSF.

Luna Taboas scored two of the Prodigiosas’ five runs in the first game, and Mia Rosario pitched four innings and allowed just one unearned run in the second game as Makayla Nieves homered and drove in five runs.

In Juncos, the Valencianas pulled off one of the day’s upsets by twice defeating the two-time defending champion Bravas of Cidra.

The Valencianas won the first game 10-9 and completed the doubleheader sweep with a decisive 8-0 victory in the second game.

Stormy Kotzelnick led the Juncos offense, scoring three runs and driving in four over the two games.

In Ponce, the Caribeñas of Salinas defeated the Grises of Humacao 1-0 in the first of a trio of games at Toño Feliciano Stadium, powered by a brilliant outing from Bianca Cruz, who pitched six scoreless innings and struck out nine batters.

In the next game, the Leonas of Ponce throttled Humacao 12-2 as Yahelis Muñoz drove in four runs.

The Caribeñas closed out the day with an 8-2 victory over the Leonas. Pitcher Yeraldine Carrión once again looked dominant, pitching a complete seven-inning game, allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out five batters.
