San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo announced Monday that the traditional celebrations to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new year will be temporarily exempt from compliance with certain provisions of the Municipal Public Order Code.

The temporary relaxation, established by Executive Order MSJ-061, Series 2024-2025, will allow for specific adjustments to regulations related to the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages, business operating hours, and regulations on unnecessary noise.

“With this measure, we seek to foster a responsible and organized celebration environment, ensuring that all Sanjuaneros and visitors can enjoy our festivities in peace and harmony, respecting the essence of our traditions,” Romero Lugo said. “These festivities not only allow us to reflect on the challenges overcome and the achievements reached, but also give us the opportunity to renew our goals for the future. It is my commitment as mayor to ensure that these celebrations can be enjoyed safely, joyfully and responsibly, preserving the spirit of unity that defines us as Sanjuaneros.”

Since Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, is a legal holiday, the relaxation for the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages will be in effect from 2:00 a.m. to 6 a.m. Meanwhile, the authorized exemption on unnecessary or excessive noise will apply continuously today, Dec. 31, 2024 and Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025.

Although the relaxations have been implemented, the prohibitions on selling or serving alcoholic beverages to minors under 18 years of age, as well as offering them in original containers for consumption outside establishments, remain in full force. To ensure compliance with the measures, the San Juan Municipal Police, in collaboration with the commonwealth police, will be carrying out constant patrols in the capital city’s communities.
