To celebrate the International Day for the Protection of Nature, the Municipality of San Juan will hold the 2nd edition of its Electronics Recycling event on Friday (Oct. 18) in drive-thru mode and free of charge.

Some examples of devices that can be recycled are computers (laptops and desktops), mice, UPS batteries, cables, keyboards, cell phones, tablets, headphones, televisions, monitors, video game consoles, cable TV boxes, internet modems, home printers, security cameras and digital cameras.

During the event, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., citizens of San Juan will be able to go to the community collection center at Coliseíto Pedrín Zorrilla using the entrance on Domenech Avenue to leave their electronics with personnel from the Office of Environmental Compliance and Planning.

“Our goal is to promote a safe and environmentally sustainable management system for electronic equipment and components in order to minimize their environmental impact,” San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo said. “We also seek to promote the reuse, recycling, recovery, and development of appropriate systems for collecting and processing this equipment. Our first event, held on November 15, 2023, was a resounding success, with the participation of 710 citizens. Forty-three thousand, one hundred twenty-six pounds of electronic waste were diverted.”

Citizens with questions about the items to be recycled can take their material to the event, where specialized personnel will be available to classify it and manage its distribution to the corresponding recycling companies on the island. In addition, the Municipality of San Juan will not charge citizens who participate in the service since private companies charge by weight or item for the recycling of electronic devices.

The event is to be held in compliance with Act 18 of 2012, the “Law to Promote the Recycling and Disposal of Electronic Equipment in Puerto Rico,” to achieve the reduction of hazardous waste from discarded electronic equipment.
