Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR by its acronym in Spanish) President Sara Rosario Vélez announced Thursday at the entity’s ordinary assembly that she will seek an additional term corresponding to the new Olympic cycle.
“Yes, I will be available for four more years,” Rosario said in a written statement. “Los Angeles [the 2028 Summer Olympic Games] is a new project. We will be here to work on the new goals.”
The electoral process began at a special assembly, following a recess after the ordinary assembly ended.
The members of the public interest who finished their terms with the option of re-election are: the president, Rosario; the secretary general, Carlos Beltrán; the second vice president, Víctor López; along with members Ivelisse Echevarría, Luis Rivera Tolero, Jorge O. Sosa and Edgardo Rivera.
López announced his retirement from sports administration, choosing to become a collaborator instead.
The COPUR Nomination Committee, which will lead the first stage of the process of electing members of public interest, comprises Yum Ramos, basketball delegate; Iván Santos, table tennis delegate; and Andrés Vargas, weightlifting delegate.
By provision of the COPUR Constitution in Article 402 of Chapter IV Elections, the electoral process will begin within a period of no more than 120 days after the conclusion of the Olympic Games or, in the absence of the Games, after the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the last general electoral process, and will be completed 60 days after it began.
