Gov. Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, along with Family Secretary Ciení Rodríguez Troche and the head of the Family Socioeconomic Development Administration, Alberto Fradera Vázquez, announced Wednesday that more 3,000 minors between the ages of 3 and 17 from families participating in the TANF Program will receive on Friday special bonuses of $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000 to cover the costs of school supplies, uniforms and other back-to-school necessities.

“One of my administration’s priorities is to equip our students to have a school year with all the tools they need to be successful,” the governor said in a written statement. “[...] There are families that, certainly, have great challenges and our responsibility is to support them so that these minors reach the maximum of their potential. With this assistance, we provide the opportunity for them to return to school with the school materials they need and be ready to focus on their studies.”

The governor noted that the bonus, which totals $5.5 million from the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program, known as TANF, in its Category C and is granted to minors from families below the poverty level, with a single parent or in whose family there is a father or mother with a disability. Assistance per minor, according to age, is divided into $1,000 for minors between the ages of 3 and 4 years of age, $2,000 for minors between the ages of 5 and 11 years and $3,000 for minors between 12 and 17 and 11 months.

“Supporting the education and preparation of your children is the greatest gift a father or mother can give them,” Fradera Vázquez said. ‘Providing the resources to these parents to support their children will bear great fruit.”

For the 2024-2025 school year, two periods have been designated for the sale of school materials and uniforms free of the payment of sales and use tax, known as the IVU by its acronym in Spanish. They will be this Friday and Saturday (July 19 and July 20), as well as Friday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025.
