Tropical Storm Kirk formed Monday, the 11th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season and the fourth in the past week — starting with Helene, which killed more than 100 people and caused destruction from Florida to North Carolina.
It is currently far out over the open waters of the Atlantic, but forecasters with the National Hurricane Center expect it could grow to become a powerful hurricane in the next few days.
This year had been forecast to be an exceptionally active season, but was mostly characterized by an extended lull for much of August and September. Things picked up last week, though, with Hurricane Helene hitting Florida late Thursday as a powerful and destructive Category 4 storm. Hurricane Isaac and Tropical Storm Joyce also formed within days of each other last week, though neither was a threat to land.
