University of Puerto Rico President Zayira Jordán Conde announced on Tuesday the dismissal of five chancellors -- at the Río Piedras, Mayagüez, Bayamón, Ponce and Aguadilla campuses -- as part of an administrative reconfiguration aimed at strengthening institutional operations.

“In my role as president of the university system, I bear the non-delegable responsibility of ensuring efficient operations -- administratively, academically, and fiscally -- at each of our campuses,” Jordán Conde said.

“These decisions stem from a responsible, carefully weighed evaluation process focused exclusively on the institutional strengthening of the university and on the operational stability required by the times we are currently navigating,” the official added, speaking before the UPR governing board.

Jordán Conde announced the withdrawal of confidence in Río Piedras Campus Chancellor Angélica Varela Llavona, as well as a request for the resignation of Mayagüez Campus Chancellor Agustín Rullán Toro. She added that Miguel Vélez Rubio, Tessie Cruz Rivera and Sonia Rivera González have submitted their immediate resignations.

The UPR president maintained that university governance requires strategic alignment, effective execution, and an administration capable of responding with agility to institutional challenges regarding infrastructure, fiscal stability, regulatory compliance and student services.

“I am grateful for the willingness to serve demonstrated by the officials who have held these positions,” Jordán Conde said. “Decisions regarding institutional leadership are made in the interest of unity of purpose, effective coordination, and a shared vision with the central administration.”

Jordán Conde affirmed that every campus and unit within the University of Puerto Rico plays a fundamental role within the university system. She also noted that the new chancellors have already been identified as part of the administrative reorganization process and that their appointments will be announced shortly.

“Institutional transformation is firm, measurable, and unceasing,” she stressed. “Our commitment lies with the students, the faculty and non-faculty staff, and the comprehensive strengthening of the University of Puerto Rico.”
