US beats PR in straight sets at men’s volleyball Pan American Cup

The Puerto Rican men’s national volleyball team fell 3-0 (21-25, 24-26, 18-25) to the United States at the 2026 Men’s Pan American Cup in Morelos, Mexico on Tuesday.
At the Poliforum 2 of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos, the U.S. secured its second victory of the tournament, improving its Group A record to 2-0, while Puerto Rico fell to 0-2.
“We played against Puerto Rico last October, and they rallied to push that match to five sets,” said Patrick Rogers of the U.S. “It’s always competitive against them, and that’s what we like; that’s what we want -- to play with intensity and be super competitive.”
The U.S. dominated Puerto Rico in attacks (41-30), held a wide 11-1 advantage in blocks, and prevailed 3-1 in service points. Puerto Rico committed fewer unforced errors, with 21 compared to 31 for the U.S.
Pedro Molina was Puerto Rico’s top scorer with 11 points. Rogers led the U.S. with 12 points, and Sean Kelly added 11.
After dropping the first set, Puerto Rico responded in the second, at one point taking a four-point lead at 19-15. The U.S. rallied to tie the score at 19-19, and the teams were even at 24 points before the Americans scored the final two for the set win.
In the third set, the U.S. led by five points midway through en route to the seven-point win.
“Just as we had good moments yesterday [Monday against Canada], we haven’t been able to be consistent in transition,” Puerto Rico head coach Jamille Torres Rosario said. “The important thing is that we aren’t losing ranking points, and now we are preparing for our remaining two group-stage matches to contend for a medal.”
Puerto Rico was to play Costa Rica on Wednesday, followed by Trinidad and Tobago today.
