Vaqueros kick off BSN Finals with a win

The Vaqueros of Bayamón defeated the Santeros of Aguada 91-75 in Game 1 of the National Superior Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) Finals at Rubén Rodríguez Coliseum in Bayamón on Sunday night.
The hosts set the pace from the start, staking out a 23-13 lead in the first quarter and extending the advantage in the second quarter for a 45-28 halftime lead.
The Santeros whittled the Vaqueros’ lead down to single digits after halftime, but the defending champions still led 64-50 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Aguada never got closer than 12 points during the final period as Bayamón sealed the victory in the opener of the best-of-seven championship series.
The Vaqueros did damage near the basket, scoring 42 points in the paint and shooting 48% from the field, compared to 39% for the Santeros.
Gary Browne led the Bayamón offense with 22 points and five assists. Damian Jones dominated the paint with a double-double of 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Jassel Pérez added 16 points and Stephen Thompson Jr. contributed 10.
Rigoberto Mendoza and Matthew Lee scored 13 points each for Aguada. Iván Gandía added 12 points, Joel Soriano contributed 11 and Jacob Wiley finished with 10.
Game 2 is Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Aguada.
