Woman shot at Villalba medical office dies of wounds in femicide

Police reported on Thursday that a 49-year-old woman, identified as Zulma Negrón Torres, has died at the Río Piedras Medical Center. She succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained during an incident that occurred on Monday at a medical office in Villalba, where a man took his own life.

According to the police, Negrón Torres was found with gunshot wounds at Dr. Méndez’s office, located on Calle 1 in Villalba, after a call to the 9-1-1 emergency system reported gunfire at about 8:38 a.m. on Oct. 19.

The police report states that the body of 61-year-old Ángel Torres Colón -- who took his own life -- was also found at the scene.

Authorities indicated that Negrón Torres was initially transported to a local hospital, where a physician described her condition as critical and ordered her transfer to the Río Piedras Medical Center. Her death was subsequently confirmed while she was hospitalized.

Personnel from the Homicide Division of the Ponce Criminal Investigation Corps (CIC), along with prosecutor Melissa Rodríguez, have taken charge of the investigation, according to the police.
