The 2026 season of the Women’s Softball Premier League (LPSF by its initials in Spanish) will officially begin this Friday, with the opening game scheduled for 7 p.m. at Luis “Papa” Rivera Park in Cidra.

In the sole matchup of opening night, the defending runners-up, the Leonas of Ponce, will visit the reigning champions, the Bravas of Cidra, in a highly anticipated rematch.

“One could say that this is a continuation of what was formerly the Superior League,” said Jean M. Rodríguez Martínez, general director of the LPSF. “The difference is that there was an administrative separation. The Federation presented a proposal to the team owners, an agreement was reached, and -- to reflect this change -- the league was given this new identity.”

“The only real change is that the team owners now administer the League; in all other respects, it remains a league sanctioned by the Federation, and they continue to answer to the Federation,” the official added. “Furthermore, players must remain in compliance with the Federation in order to participate in international competitions.”

The season will feature seven franchises: the Bravas, Leonas, Grises of Humacao, Valencianas of Juncos, Caribeñas of Salinas, Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande and Costaneras of Guánica.

Each team will play 18 games in a round-robin format during the regular season.

Among the key new features introduced this year is the implementation of the “manager challenge” -- a video review mechanism that will allow team managers to request a review of specific plays during games.

Additionally, each squad will be permitted to utilize up to three “reinforcement” players (guest players) throughout the season. Teams will also have the option to temporarily replace up to three players from their roster who are away participating in international competitions.

“For this year, the number of reinforcements has been increased,” Rodríguez Martínez noted. “In the past, the league allowed two reinforcements for teams that failed to qualify for the postseason, and one for the top four teams. Now, three reinforcements have been approved for everyone. It is basically the same policy currently in place for volleyball and basketball. Consequently, every team is entitled to three reinforcements, and that is going to give the league a significant boost.”

“In addition to that, in July -- when the national team players depart -- teams will have the benefit of replacing those national team players with additional reinforcements,” he added. “At any given moment, you could have a team like Cidra fielding six reinforcement players.”

The postseason will feature best-of-five semifinal series -- expanded from best-of three -- under the banner “Road to Glory,” while the championship series will be contested in a best-of-seven format and will be named the “Crown Series.”

“Now the finals -- just like in all the other leagues -- will be a best-of-seven series,” Rodríguez Martínez said.

Another new feature is that every game of the season will be streamed live on YouTube, allowing fans to follow the action from anywhere.

“We are committed to providing fans with up-to-date information through our social media channels,” Rodríguez Martínez said. “That is why it has been important for me to ensure that every game is available via live stream, that fans can follow the play-by-play action via iScore, and that our Facebook and Instagram accounts are kept constantly updated.”

The action continues on Saturday when Humacao visits Sabana Grande and Juncos plays in Salinas, with games starting at 4 p.m. On Sunday, May 31, Sabana Grande will be in Ponce at 3 p.m., while Guánica will visit Juncos and Salinas will travel to Humacao for 4 p.m. games.
