House Government Committee Chairman Víctor Parés announced the allocation of $1 million to the Municipality of San Juan for the reconstruction of the bridge serving the Parcelas Canejas sector, which sustained severe structural damage following Hurricane Maria in September 2017.

“The bridge at the entrance to Parcelas Canejas is heavily traveled because it serves as a gateway to dozens of surrounding communities. After Hurricane Maria, part of the structure collapsed due to the storm’s heavy rainfall, and since then only one lane has remained open, causing significant traffic congestion and placing additional strain on the bridge,” said Parés, who represents House District 4 in San Juan.

“With this $1 million allocation, work can move forward on this much-needed bridge. We thank House Speaker Carlos ‘Johnny’ Méndez, Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, and our fellow San Juan legislators for supporting this important measure for the residents who depend on this bridge operating with two lanes at all times,” the New Progressive Party lawmaker added.

The funding is provided through House Joint Resolution 375, which passed the House by a vote of 46-6 and the Senate by a vote of 19-5.

The measure now heads to Gov. Jenniffer González Colón for her signature.

The funds will be used for improvements and reconstruction of the bridge located at the entrance to the Parcelas Canejas sector on Calle 4 (Fidalgo Díaz Street).
