San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo announced Tuesday the opening of the bridge on Camino Pedro Viera, a project completed under a municipal emergency plan that represented an investment of $739,411.28 from the emergency fund.
The project restores vehicular and pedestrian traffic after the collapse of three 48-inch diameter pipes that had hindered residents’ mobility.
“When this emergency occurred, we immediately activated all the necessary resources to ensure that this community regained access as quickly as possible,” Romero Lugo said.
The project was developed in conjunction with the Puerto Rico Construction Workers Cooperative and included the installation of six prefabricated 15-by-12-foot box culvert units, each weighing some 25 tons. It also included structural concrete, backfill, paving, guardrail installation, drainage ditches, and stormwater pipe extensions. Safety measures were also implemented, collapsed pipes were removed, and the area was prepared for the new structure. The project concluded with the restoration of the affected area and a final inspection that validated the bridge’s safety.
Public Works Director Raúl García highlighted the technical execution of the project.
“This work required precision at every stage,” he said. “From the preparation of the riverbed to the positioning of each box culvert unit, everything was carried out with the utmost rigor to guarantee the bridge’s stability and the safety of the residents.”
