The Autonomous Municipality of Caguas announced Sunday that the Muévete Libre application, which was developed by the team at the municipal Department of Citizen Mobility, obtained two important international recognitions that confirm the transformative impact of the initiative on urban mobility and citizen well-being.
Muévete Libre is a free municipal app -- the first of its kind in Puerto Rico -- that allows citizens to locate system vehicles in real time, see estimated arrival times, check active routes and plan their trips from any device with internet access.
In May, the Foundation for the Development of Solidarity and Social Inclusion awarded the municipality the Latin American Prize for Economic and Social Development 2026 in the Urban Development category for the Muévete Libre app.
The prestigious international award celebrates leaders and officials who promote high-impact social and economic projects for the benefit of their citizens. It was not the first time Caguas had received the recognition. Last year, the municipality was recognized for the Green Classroom project.
“That Caguas has once again occupied this international podium, this time with Muévete Libre, reaffirms the municipality’s sustained leadership in social and urban innovation at the Latin American level,” Caguas Mayor William Miranda Torres said in a written statement.
The award will be presented to municipal staff this Saturday at a ceremony in Bogotá, Colombia.
Meanwhile, the app also was the winner in the Family Mobility Focused Innovation category of the 2026 Transportation Innovation Competition, known at the federal level as “Build a Better Mousetrap,” sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and organized locally by the Transportation Technology Transfer Center of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.
As a result of placing first in Puerto Rico, the app qualifies to compete at the national level against the best ideas from all 50 states.
