The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) has launched a request for proposals (RFP) to establish an inventory of greenhouse gases (GHG) in Puerto Rico, corresponding to the years 2022 and 2023, and a projection for 2040.

The initiative seeks to monitor emissions on the island and move toward the goal of near-zero emissions by 2050.

“Although Puerto Rico is not a major emitter of greenhouse gases compared to industrialized countries, it is our responsibility to reduce these emissions,” said interim DNER Secretary Roberto Méndez.

The main sources of greenhouse gas emissions on the island are energy generation and transportation.

The inventory must include data on GHG removal by vegetation, considering damage caused by hurricanes Irma and Maria, and reforestation efforts. It must also measure emissions of seven key gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, in annual tons.

Proposals must be submitted to aire@drna.pr.gov by Nov. 3, and the maximum amount allocated for the project is $350,000.
