The Luis Muñoz Marín Foundation (FLMM by its initials in Spanish) this week announced the installation of a system of 415 solar panels that now supplies 100% of the electricity the institution requires for its operations.

With the project, the FLMM becomes the first nonprofit organization -- with an educational, cultural and ecological mission, and custodian of the most important historical archive of Puerto Rico’s contemporary history -- to fully replace traditional electric power with renewable energy.

The new photovoltaic system enables all Foundation facilities -- including its archive areas, exhibition spaces, educational programs, and outdoor grounds -- to operate entirely on solar energy, thereby aligning its daily operations with the environmental philosophy it has promoted for decades.

“With this important step, the Luis Muñoz Marín Foundation brings its ecological philosophy of conservation and environmental stewardship beyond words and into action,” FLMM Executive Director Javier Alemán said. “The FLMM has transformed itself into a green energy institution, adopting forward-looking environmental practices that we implement responsibly for the good of nature and humanity.”

The renewable energy project builds upon the organization’s longstanding commitment to ecological awareness, which is also represented through Parque Doña Inés, its botanical and ecological garden.

From this space, the Foundation promotes the conservation of flora and fauna, environmental education, and the responsible enjoyment of nature, integrating students, families, and communities into experiences that foster greater respect for the environment and sustainability.

“With this initiative, the Foundation strengthens its commitment to preserving both Puerto Rico’s historic documentary heritage and the natural environment that surrounds it, reaffirming that environmental protection is an integral part of its mission,” Alemán added.
