Foundation: First ship carrying aid departs to Venezuela

Ten railcars containing some 110,100 pounds of essential supplies departed from the dock bound for Venezuela on Tuesday night, marking a new chapter in the solidarity initiative that has mobilized thousands of people in Puerto Rico to support those gravely impacted by the twin earthquakes that struck the South American country on June 24.

The Multinational Foundation on Wednesday announced the departure of the first ship carrying humanitarian aid to Venezuela, marking a new chapter in the solidarity initiative that has mobilized thousands of people in Puerto Rico to support the Venezuelan people in the aftermath of the twin earthquakes that struck the South American country on June 24. 

The maritime shipment follows the first cargo of supplies that departed by air on July 11, expanding the reach of the humanitarian mission. Ten railcars containing some 110,100 pounds of essential supplies departed from the dock, the result of the commitment and generosity of thousands of individuals, volunteers, businesses and organizations that stepped up to help.

The shipment, which departed late Tuesday night, includes food, hygiene products for children and adults, diapers, wipes, personal grooming items, first aid supplies, medical and surgical equipment, wheelchairs, crutches, canes, serums and other essential items that will benefit vulnerable families.

The mission is being carried out in partnership with Caritas Puerto Rico, which will coordinate the safe delivery of the aid to Caritas Venezuela for distribution among the communities with the greatest needs. The vessel is expected to arrive at its destination on Aug. 18.

The maritime transport of the railcars is being carried out in partnership with CMA-CGM as part of the humanitarian logistics operation. The effort has also been supported by multiple partners who joined forces to make the mission a reality: Caribbean Produce Exchange assisted with the cross-docking and transport to the dock, Anytime Transport donated the transport of the railcars from the collection center at Hiram Bithorn Stadium, the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Puerto Rico facilitated the connection with Caritas Venezuela and Intership donated railcars for moving the merchandise from the docks.

“For us, it represents hope put into action,” said Josette Barnés, spokesperson for the Multinational Foundation. “Each box that leaves carries much more than supplies; it carries the affection, solidarity, and commitment of thousands of people who decided to help.”

The Foundation emphasized that Tuesday’s shipment would not have been possible without the extraordinary response of the people of Puerto Rico, who came together to donate essential items, offer their time as volunteers and support the logistics of the operation.
