House allocates $250,000 to support teen mothers and their children

Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez, along with District 9 (Toa Alta and Bayamón) Rep. Félix Pacheco Burgos, announced on Tuesday the allocation of $250,000 for the non-profit organization Proyecto Nacer, which supports teenage mothers with their children, providing them with educational and other services.

“Non-profit organizations play a leading role in the development of our people, which is why this House of Representatives has been proactive in ensuring support for entities like Proyecto Nacer, which addresses a real need in our society,” said the House speaker, who will visit the headquarters of Proyecto Nacer this Friday as part of his community impact initiative “100 x 35.”

“I want to thank the speaker of the House for always being attentive to the needs of our legislative district,” said Pacheco, who chairs the Public Safety Committee in the lower chamber. “The Proyecto Nacer program is of great importance to our youth. Its focus on fostering families of teenagers with children has been key for these families and for family development, which is why it has our support.”

The funds will come from House Joint Resolution 372, which was passed on June 30.

Although there is no concrete figure, it is estimated that 6.1% of the 18,085 births in 2025 were to a woman under 20 years of age.
