House to hold Special Session to commemorate 250 years of US independence

“This Special Session will not only highlight that moment that changed the world, but we will also look toward the future,” said House Vice President Ángel Peña Ramírez.

Rep. José Aponte Hernández, along with House of Representatives Vice Presidents Yashira Lebrón Rodríguez and Ángel Peña Ramírez, announced that next Monday, June 29 at 1 p.m., the legislative body will hold a Special Session entitled “250 Years America-Puerto Rico” in commemoration of United States independence.

The main messages will be delivered by House Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez and Gov. Jenniffer González Colón.

The proceedings of the Special Session will be broadcast in real time on the House website and the Facebook page camaraconpr, as well as on the Metro newspaper’s social media channels.

“The nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence from England. That historic moment when 56 courageous citizens of the then-colonies united to reject an immoral political status that did not provide them with the opportunities for the full development of their aspirations,” Peña said. “This Special Session will not only highlight that moment that changed the world, but we will also look toward the future.” 

Lebrón added that the marking of “250 years since the founding of our nation, the United States of America … is a unique moment in the history of democracy.”

“That is why we urge all citizens to share in this event that begins with this Special Session,” she said.

Among the many special guests will be San Lorenzo Mayor Jaime Alverio Ramos. On July 4, the island government will hold commemorative events in the eastern-central town.
