Urges responsible caretaking of beaches as summer season ratchets up

To protect and safeguard the lives of residents and tourists participating in the traditional “Noche de San Juan” (St. John’s Eve) celebration, Rep. Axel “Chino” Roque Gracia, who chairs the Tourism Committee in the island House of Representatives, urged the public on Tuesday to enjoy the festivities responsibly and mindfully, while respecting life and natural resources.

“The message is clear: enjoy, socialize, and celebrate, but always prioritize your safety and that of your loved ones,” Roque Gracia said. “Working closely with the Tourism Company, we have launched an awareness campaign this summer to encourage responsible decision-making and prevent people from putting their lives at risk. This initiative includes educational efforts and the launch of a real-time app that allows users to check beach conditions before deciding to visit.”

The legislator recommended that anyone planning to visit beaches and public bathing areas, whether on Tuesday night or thereafter, check marine conditions beforehand using the SwimSafePR platform, which is available for Android and Apple devices.

SwimSafePR provides users with real-time information on marine conditions at beaches and public bathing areas across the island, serving as a key tool for the safety of swimmers and visitors.

Roque Gracia also called on the public to help conserve natural resources and keep recreational areas clean.

“We want everyone to enjoy themselves with family and friends, but to do so responsibly,” said the legislator for District 28 (Naranjito, Corozal, Comerío and Barranquitas). “The best celebration is one that allows us to return home safe and sound. Furthermore, we must protect our beaches and natural spaces by properly collecting and disposing of trash. Let us celebrate with respect, responsibility, and mindfulness, looking out for our lives, our families, and the resources that make Puerto Rico a unique destination.”
