For the first time in history, the general public will be able to learn about, see and explore the largest collection of mangoes in the Caribbean during the Mango Festival, a cultural, educational and family-friendly event to be held this Friday through Sunday at Parque de los Próceres in Mayagüez, with free admission and parking.

The event will be made possible thanks to a partnership between the University of Mayagüez (RUM), the Agricultural Extension Service, and the Agricultural Experimental Station, which are bringing in the largest living collection of mango varieties from the Caribbean, numbering more than 87.

“We invite all of Puerto Rico to be part of this great celebration in our city,” Mayagüez Mayor Jorge L. Ramos said. “This weekend, Mayagüez shines once again as the capital of sports, culture, and, this time, mangoes. In the beautiful Parque de los Próceres -- our green lung in the heart of the city -- there will be live music, exquisite cuisine, educational workshops, exhibits, and many activities for the entire family to enjoy.”

“This festival reaffirms our commitment to agriculture, education, and local economic development,” the mayor added. “We are ready to welcome you with open arms.”

Over the three days, the public will be able to participate in educational workshops on grafting, planting, home gardens, mango preservation, proper food handling, and the nutritional and medicinal benefits of mangoes.

In addition, there will be educational presentations on other fruit trees and Puerto Rican coffee (and its tasting).
