Puerto Rico Mayors Federation President Gabriel “Gaby” Hernández Rodríguez on Sunday commended Gov. Jenniffer González Colón for securing the allocation of $94 million earmarked for the rehabilitation and repair of roads in more than 44 municipalities.
Furthermore, he pledged to work alongside the central government and the Financial Oversight and Management Board to secure additional funds that would benefit the remaining municipalities left out of the current distribution.
“On behalf of our mayors, I express my gratitude for this allocation of funds, which will allow us to swiftly address the rehabilitation of dozens of roads across the entire island,” Hernández Rodríguez said. “These funds have a direct impact on the lives of thousands of citizens, as they translate into improved infrastructure and greater accessibility, while also contributing to the economic growth of our towns.”
Hernández Rodríguez also highlighted the consistent support they have received from Transportation and Public Works Secretary Edwin González-Montalvo, and Robert Mujica, the executive director of the oversight board, regarding such initiatives aimed at strengthening municipal projects. The mayor of Camuy reiterated his intention to initiate discussions with the executive branch and the oversight board to identify additional funds for distribution among the municipalities that were not included on this occasion.
“The needs across all municipalities are similar, and we are fully aware of this,” he said. “Therefore, my intention is to collaborate to ensure that, in the not-too-distant future, the government allocates funds to them as well. In the meantime, we are confident that the collaborative agreements authorizing the commencement of work in the beneficiary municipalities will begin to be signed in the coming weeks.”
Of the 37 municipalities affiliated with the Mayors Federation, which gathers mayors under the New Progressive Party umbrella, 24 were included in the plan. Collectively, they will receive nearly $40 million.
