Moca falls under PDP control for first time in 36 years

Efraín ‘Franco’ Barreto Barreto, a businessman and community leader, emerged victorious in the mayoral race for Moca, Puerto Rico, bringing the city under the control of the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) for the first time in 36 years.


With 100% of the votes counted across the 99 electoral units in Moca, Barreto Barreto secured 45.58% of the total votes, surpassing incumbent mayor Ángel ‘Beto’ Pérez by 1,237 votes, according to the latest scrutiny votes.


Barreto Barreto, expressing his gratitude to the voters, stated, “Making history together! I am deeply thankful to each voter for their trust in me. Alongside my Municipal Assembly and work team, we pledge to serve with transparency and dedication to foster Moca’s growth and prosperity. This victory belongs to everyone!” Moca had been under the administration of the New Progressive Party (PNP) for the past 36 years before this historic shift.


The new mayor also announced that he will be sworn into office on Saturday, January 18, 2025. He will first attend a Mass at 5:00 p.m. at the Our Lady of Monserrate Parish, followed by official ceremonies in the town square, and a community activity and music session.


Barreto assumes the mayor’s office along with the municipal legislators who accompanied him on the ballot: Ana E. Pérez Barreto, Amirelis Barreto Barreto, Rubén Edwin Muñoz, Jeannette Ortiz Vives, Zoraida Hernández Pérez, Sujeily Barreto Barreto, Héctor M.’ Mol’ Ibañez, Zoraida Meléndez Acevedo, Luis Sánchez Martínez, Miguel Ángel Pérez and José Manuel González Méndez.
