A Cabo Rojo municipal employee was seriously injured Wednesday in an accident while performing sanitation work on highway PR-102 in the Carbonell extension, police reported.


According to the police, the victim was identified as Luis Caballery Vélez, 31, who was caught between a Toyota Tacoma and an International 7000S truck owned by the municipality. The driver of the Toyota, identified as Aníbal Galileo Santiago, 73, a resident of San Germán, was driving the vehicle with expired annual license fees.


Caballery Vélez was transported in critical condition by paramedics to the Río Piedras Medical Center.


Officers from the Mayagüez Patrol and Highway Division, along with prosecutor Diego Velázquez Fas, were in charge of the scene investigation.
