A six-run outburst in the seventh inning gave the Ponce Lions a 7-1 victory over the San Juan Senators on Saturday night in Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (LBPRC by its initials in Spanish) play.
The win, combined with the Santurce Crabbers’ loss to the Carolina Giants, resulted in a tie for first place in the league standings between Ponce and Santurce, as both teams have a 21-13 record. The Senators are in last place at 9-24.
The Lions (Leones) scored their first run against Senators pitcher Brady Tedesco with a sacrifice fly to left field by Sammy Hernández in the fourth inning. The Senators (Senadores) tied the score, 1-1, in the fifth inning on a single by Yariel González.
Ponce erupted for six runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. The key hits were three singles by Jacob Berry, Will Simoneit and Chris Arroyo, making the score 7-1.
Left-hander Eric Torres (1-0) was the winning pitcher in relief, allowing no runs in two and two-thirds innings. Torres gave up only one hit and struck out three.
Right-hander Agnel Miranda (0-1) was charged with the loss after three Lions runs were attributed to him in one inning, during which he walked two batters.
Meanwhile, the Crabbers (Cangrejeros) fell 4-2 to the Carolina Giants at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in Hato Rey.
The Giants (Gigantes) improved to 17-17, tying with the Caguas Criollos for fourth place.
Third baseman Sabin Ceballos stood out offensively for the Giants, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, and three RBIs.
The win went to right-hander Pedro Santos (1-0) after he pitched a scoreless inning in relief, striking out two. His bullpen mate Ricardo Vélez earned his second save of the season. Left-hander Miguel Martínez (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs in his four and one-third innings pitched, during which he also walked two and struck out two.
At Isidoro Cholo García Stadium in Mayagüez, a ninth inning single by Onix Vega (3-for-4 with an RBI) gave the Criollos a 2-1 victory over the Mayagüez Indians.
The fifth-place Indians (Indios) fell to 16-17.
