With record attendance, the Puerto Rico Hospital Association (PRHA) closed its 2024 Annual Convention this past weekend with the presentation of recognitions to five pillars of the health industry as the organization celebrated 82 years of its founding.
PRHA Executive President Jaime Plá Cortés praised what he called the “most important event in the health industry, which included workshops and conferences with continuing education credits on topics related to aspects of the financial sector, a discussion of regulatory-legal measures, and updates to the laws with their regulations.”
“The Plenary Assemblies had as a central theme a frank discussion with the candidates for governor and resident commissioner who will be on the ballot for the next November 5 elections,” Plá Cortés added in a written statement. “Attendees at the 2024 Convention had the opportunity to listen to [candidates for governor] Juan Dalmau [Puerto Rican Independence Party], Representative Jesús Manuel Ortiz [Popular Democratic Party (PDP)], Mayor Javier Jiménez [Dignity Project], and Resident Commissioner Jennifer González [New Progressive Party (NPP)], who in frank dialogue and an atmosphere surrounded by concerns about the future of the health industry answered all the questions from the public and the press who attended the ‘plenary sessions.’”
“Likewise,” Plá Cortés continued, “the candidates for resident commissioner Senator Ana Irma Rivera Lassén [Citizen Victory Movement] , attorney Pablo José Hernández (PDP) and Senator William Villafañe (NPP) made the individual presentation of the platform for their respective candidacies. The outcome of this work has been very positive for those who manage the leadership of Puerto Rico’s hospitals.”
The 2024 convention closed with the marking of the 82nd anniversary of the PRHA and “the recognition of leaders and institutions that have stood out in the health industry in Puerto Rico,” said Carlos Santiago, the new chairman of the PRHA board of directors.
Receiving mention were Raquel Ortega Mangual (vice president of human resources at Metro Pavia Health System), Dr. Pedro Benítez Lorenzo (medical director at Hospital Damas de Ponce), Don Ángel Cocero Sánchez (vice chairman of the board of trustees and chairman of the board of directors at Hospital Español Auxilio Mutuo), attorney Marta Rivera Plaza (CEO of the San Juan Capestrano Hospital System) and CPA Ricardo Hernández (executive director of the Mennonite Health System). Also recognized, from the government sector, were island Health Secretary Carlos Mellado López and Robert Mujica, the executive director of the Financial Oversight and Management Board, both of whom addressed the convention.
